The purpose of the short is to thank people for help during the prefecture's reconstruction efforts and prevent victims' memories of the 2011 disaster from fading away.
The anime's story focuses on a pair of 16-year-old high school students who experience the Tohoku disaster and grow in the aftermath. Jun Agatsuma's father is a doctor, and she worries about the future. Kunpei Satou's father is a fisherman, and it was decided that the boy will succeed his father in the job. The pair's lives are suddenly disrupted when the 2011 earthquake and tsunami hit their area. The two determine their futures as Miyagi Prefecture recovers in the wake of the disaster.
Three people connected to Miyagi Prefecture were chosen to voice the short's characters.

Where it came from
Ima, Futari no Michi was produced in 2015 by Asahi Production as a special animated project commissioned by the Japanese government. Specifically, it was created for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to promote awareness and safety regarding the then-newly established Hokuriku Shinkansen line. The narrative centers on a young couple navigating the transition between their long-distance relationship and their eventual reunion facilitated by the improved rail infrastructure.
The visual design follows the aesthetic trends of mid-2010s Japanese web animation, favoring soft character designs and atmospheric backgrounds to evoke a sense of sentimental travel. As a promotional vehicle, the project aimed to humanize the massive engineering effort of the Shinkansen expansion by focusing on personal connectivity. It was received as a gentle, slice-of-life short that successfully blended corporate messaging with the nostalgic tone common in domestic travel advertisements of the era.
