Where it came from
In Case You're Gonna Jump is a notable zine published in 1993 by the American writer and artist Aaron Cometbus. Emerging from the vibrant and politically charged Berkeley punk scene of the early nineties, the publication serves as a quintessential example of the DIY print culture that defined the era. It was created to provide a raw, unfiltered platform for personal narratives, cultural critique, and the interconnected stories of the underground music community, reflecting the transient, itinerant lifestyle often associated with the punk rock subculture.
The zine is widely recognized for Cometbus's distinctive storytelling style, which blends autobiographical sketches with observational journalism. The aesthetic is intentionally spare, favoring a cut-and-paste collage layout common to the zine format, which emphasizes authenticity over polished design. Upon its release, it was received as a significant artifact of the independent press movement, appreciated by readers for its commitment to documenting the fringes of societal norms and its honest portrayal of the joys and struggles inherent in the counterculture experience.
