The series is notable for its pioneering use of early CGI, specifically for the complex drifting sequences depicted on the hairpin turns of Mount Akina, which allowed for a more dynamic and realistic portrayal of automotive physics than traditional cel animation alone.

The series became a cultural touchstone for its integration of Eurobeat music and its authentic representation of the Japanese car enthusiast subculture of the nineties, particularly centered on the Toyota AE86.
