Takumi Fujiwara and brothers Keisuke and Ryousuke Takahashi have formed "Project D," a racing team aimed at bringing their driving skills to their full potential outside their prefecture. Using the internet, Project D issues challenges to other racing teams and posts results of their races. Managed by Ryousuke, the team has Takumi engaging in downhill battles with his AE86, while Keisuke challenges opponents uphill. Among their rivals are the Seven-Star Leaf (SSR) and Todo-juku.

Where it came from
Initial D 4th Stage was released in 2004 as a direct continuation of the long-running anime adaptation of Shuichi Shigeno’s popular manga series. Produced by OB Planning, this installment marked a significant shift in visual direction, transitioning fully into 3D computer-generated imagery for the series' signature car racing sequences. This technical evolution was intended to capture the complex physics of mountain pass drifting with greater kinetic energy and detail, reflecting the heightened stakes of Takumi Fujiwara’s transition from a local delivery driver to a professional racing team member.
The creative team aimed to ground the high-octane racing action in the gritty, realistic atmosphere of Japan’s street racing subculture. While the implementation of early 3D rendering was polarizing among traditionalist fans at the time of release, it ultimately became a defining aesthetic choice for the franchise. The series was well-received for its faithfulness to the source material’s mechanical accuracy and its integration of the Eurobeat music genre, which remains inseparable from the cultural legacy of the Initial D brand.
