Initial D 3rd Stage

Initial D 3rd Stage was released in 2001 as a cinematic bridge between the second and fourth seasons of the iconic street racing anime series. Produced by OB Planning in collaboration with Studio Comet, the film was designed to conclude the storyline surrounding the protagonist Takumi Fujiwara’s high school graduation and his ultimate commitment to the world of professional racing. It occupies a unique position in the franchise by moving away from the episodic television structure to a single, focused narrative arc that emphasizes the transition from street amateurism to the broader horizon of the Project D team.

The film’s aesthetic continues the series' signature blend of traditional cel-based character animation and early 3D computer-generated imagery for the car sequences. By 2001, the production team had refined the integration of these two distinct styles, aiming for a more polished and fluid representation of the perilous downhill battles on the mountain passes of Japan. The work was received favorably by fans of the manga and television series, lauded for its improved visual fidelity and for providing a definitive, high-stakes conclusion to the early chapters of the Initial D saga.
