Where it came from
Innocent Blue was released in 2005 as a direct-to-video animation project produced by Himajin Planning. The work emerged during a period of experimentation within the independent anime market, where smaller studios sought to explore niche adult-oriented narratives that departed from the more mainstream trends of the early 2000s. Its production reflects the era's reliance on modest budgets and atmospheric storytelling, prioritizing character-focused drama over large-scale spectacle.
The creative direction for Innocent Blue was centered on establishing a melancholic, intimate aesthetic that was characteristic of the studio's portfolio at the time. By focusing on a confined narrative scope, the production team aimed to evoke a sense of quiet introspection in the viewer. While the title remained a relatively obscure entry in the broader anime landscape, it serves as a representative example of the short-form OVA projects that populated the specialized direct-to-consumer market during the mid-2000s.
