"AICis" is a psychic application that is popular in Geso Ward, a school city in Tokyo. It is an app that gives special powers, "supernatural powers," to the person who installs it. Those who have the powers in their hands go on to do evil one after another in order to satisfy their own self-interest. Where it came from
Inou no AICis: ESP & High School Detective was produced by Studio ANDo and released as an original net animation in 2021. The project emerged from a broader push within independent and smaller-scale Japanese animation studios to experiment with shorter, high-concept episodic formats that blend supernatural thriller tropes with the traditional high school detective genre.
The production sought to revitalize the 'esper' subgenre by focusing on the tension between psychic phenomena and modern investigative techniques. While the animation style is characterized by its lean, digital aesthetic suited for online distribution, its narrative structure relies on the classic puzzle-solving elements found in foundational Japanese mystery manga, reflecting a conscious attempt to honor these literary roots within a contemporary, concise visual medium.
