Insomniacs After School

Insomniacs After School, or Kimi wa Hōkago Insomunia, was produced by Liden Films and released as a television series in 2023. Based on the manga by Makoto Ojiro, the narrative centers on two students suffering from insomnia who form a bond while reviving their school's abandoned astronomy club. The adaptation was directed by Yuki Ikeda, who sought to capture the quiet, melancholic, and tender atmosphere of the original print work through careful pacing and atmospheric lighting.

The series received significant critical acclaim for its nuanced character development and its realistic depiction of the Noto Peninsula setting. Designers and animators worked to maintain the distinctive aesthetic of Ojiro’s art, focusing on the interplay between nocturnal shadows and the soft, expansive light of the night sky. The production is widely regarded as a faithful and evocative translation of the source material, praised for its grounded emotional stakes and authentic portrayal of adolescent connection.
