In/Spectre

In/Spectre, known in Japan as Kyokō Suiri, originated as a light novel series written by Kyo Shirodaira and illustrated by Hiro Kiyohara and later Chasiba Katase. The narrative centers on Kotoko Iwanaga, a girl who serves as an intermediary between the human world and the supernatural. The 2020 television anime adaptation, produced by Brain's Base and directed by Keiji Gotoh, was conceived to translate the series' distinct blend of urban fantasy, mystery, and heavy dialogue into a visual format. It is notable for its deliberate pacing and its reliance on investigative puzzle-solving rather than traditional action tropes.

The adaptation was met with a nuanced reception, praised by viewers for its unique premise and the chemistry between the two leads, though some found the verbose nature of the screenplay challenging for a television format. Brain's Base approached the design with a focus on atmospheric storytelling, utilizing a color palette and character aesthetic that emphasizes the contrast between mundane modern settings and the ethereal nature of the spirits involved. The series represents the studio's broader commitment to adapting niche light novels into character-driven anime, aiming to capture the cerebral tone established by Shirodaira’s original source material.
