Where it came from
Inu-Oh was produced by the animation studio Science SARU and released in 2022, directed by Masaaki Yuasa. The film is an adaptation of Hideo Furukawa’s novel The Tale of the Heike: Inu-Oh, which reimagines the life of a 14th-century sarugaku noh performer. By blending traditional Japanese historical settings with anachronistic rock-opera aesthetics, the film explores themes of artistic expression, social ostracization, and the power of performance to shape historical memory.
The film’s distinctive visual style was defined by the character designs of manga artist Taiyo Matsumoto, known for his surreal and fluid artistic sensibility. Science SARU utilized a mix of traditional cel animation and digital techniques to capture the kinetic energy of the musical sequences. Upon its debut at the Venice International Film Festival, the film received critical acclaim for its bold departure from conventional historical dramas, particularly for its fusion of ancient Noh traditions with contemporary musical influences.
