Ichiro Inuyashiki is down on his luck. While only 58 years old, his geriatric looks often have him written off as a pathetic old man by the world around him and he's constantly ignored and disrespected by his family despite all that he's done to support them. On top of everything else, his doctor has revealed that he has cancer and it appears that he has little time left in this world. But just when it seems things couldn't get any worse, a blinding light in the night sky strikes the earth where Ichiro stands. He later wakes up to find himself unscathed, but he soon starts to notice that there's something…different about himself.

Where it came from
Inuyashiki Last Hero was produced by studio MAPPA in 2017, based on the manga series written and illustrated by Hiroya Oku. The narrative explores themes of humanity and existential dread through the story of an elderly man and a disillusioned teenager who are transformed into powerful cyborgs following an extraterrestrial encounter. The work serves as a darker, more philosophical counterpart to Oku's previous long-running series, Gantz, shifting the focus toward the moral divergence of two individuals granted god-like abilities.
The production is notable for its heavy integration of 3D computer-generated imagery to render the mechanical aspects of the characters. Directed by Keiichi Sato and Shuhei Yabuta, the series sought to capture the visceral, high-impact style of the original manga. Upon its release, it received critical attention for its stark aesthetic and unflinching portrayal of violence, though the unconventional blend of 2D character art and 3D environment mapping prompted varied reactions from the animation community regarding the studio's technical execution.
