Isekai Quartet

Isekai Quartet was produced by Studio PuYUKAI and first aired in 2019 as a comedic crossover project. The series was designed to unite characters from four popular Kadokawa-published light novel franchises—Overlord, Konosuba, Re:Zero, and The Saga of Tanya the Evil—within a shared school setting. Minoru Ashina directed and wrote the series, utilizing a distinctive super-deformed 'chibi' art style that allowed for fluid, expressive animation while facilitating interactions between disparate character designs.

The series emerged from the immense popularity of the isekai genre in late-2010s Japanese media, serving as a meta-commentary on the tropes and archetypes common to these stories. By placing protagonists and antagonists from vastly different worlds into a mundane academic environment, the production sought to highlight the comedic potential of clashing power levels and clashing personalities. It was well-received by fans for its lighthearted tone and its ability to balance the specific internal logic of four distinct series simultaneously.
