Isekai Quartet 2

Isekai Quartet 2 was produced by Studio PuYUKAI and released in 2020 as a direct continuation of the crossover comedy series featuring characters from popular light novel franchises including Overlord, Konosuba, Re:Zero, and The Saga of Tanya the Evil. The series was conceived as a lighthearted spin-off, utilizing super-deformed, chibi-style character designs to place protagonists from disparate dark fantasy worlds into a conventional Japanese high school setting. It serves as both a parody and a tribute to the 'isekai' genre, which experienced a massive surge in popularity during the late 2010s.

Directed and written by Minoru Ashina, the series aimed to subvert the intense tone of the original source materials by focusing on domestic humor and social interactions between characters who were typically rivals or warriors. The design choice to standardize the art style across different franchises was intended to create visual cohesion, allowing for comedic physical gags that would not have been possible in the original, more serious anime adaptations. Upon its release, the second season was received as a successful example of crossover fan service that managed to maintain a consistent comedic identity while introducing characters from The Rising of the Shield Hero into its established ensemble.
