Where it came from
Isobe Isobee Monogatari: Ukiyo wa Tsurai yo was produced as a short-form original net animation (ONA) series in 2015, based on the manga by Ryo Nakama serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. The adaptation was handled by the studio Gathering, utilizing a distinct 'mame-anime' or bean-sized animation style that relied on static, cutout-style movements to replicate the aesthetic of woodblock prints while emphasizing the comedic, deadpan delivery of the source material.
The series captures the absurdity of a lazy, incompetent samurai living in the Edo period, subverting traditional historical tropes through modern colloquialisms and cynical narration. The design choices were intended to mirror the flat, decorative quality of ukiyo-e art, effectively grounding the satire in a visual medium that feels both timeless and intentionally cheap. Upon release, the adaptation was well-regarded for its experimental approach to pacing and its faithful, if intentionally awkward, translation of Nakama's surreal humor.
