Where it came from
Itou Junji: Crimson, commonly known in English markets as Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre, was released in early 2023 as an anthology series adaptation of the works of renowned horror manga artist Junji Ito. The series was produced by Studio Deen, with direction and character design handled by Shinobu Tagashira, who sought to capture the unsettling, visceral nature of Ito's original line work within the medium of animation.
The collection stems from a broader push to bring Ito’s iconic, surrealist body horror to the streaming era, focusing on lesser-adapted stories alongside fan favorites like the Tomie and Souichi cycles. While the reception among the general public and longtime fans was mixed—with many debating whether the static, intricate detail of the original manga can truly be replicated in motion—it remains a significant milestone in the ongoing catalog of Ito's cross-media adaptations.
