Where it came from
Released in 2005 by the Milky Animation Label, It's a Family Affair arrived during a period when the original video animation (OVA) market was shifting toward niche, character-driven storytelling. Produced to capitalize on the burgeoning demand for experimental domestic dramas, the title served as a signature showcase for the studio's interest in blending traditional cel-style aesthetics with early digital compositing techniques.
The visual direction for this project prioritized atmospheric intimacy, relying on muted color palettes and deliberate pacing to establish its tone. While the creative team aimed for a grounded narrative that explored the complexities of household dynamics, the work received a polarized reception upon its debut. Critics generally praised the studio's technical ambition, though some viewers found the narrative structure overly abstract, ultimately cementing its reputation as a cult item for animation enthusiasts.
