Jabu Jabu Ondo

Jabu Jabu Ondo was produced by NHK for the long-running children's program Okaasann to Issho, or With Mother, which has served as a staple of Japanese educational television since 1959. The song and its associated animation were created to entertain young viewers while incorporating traditional Japanese musical elements, specifically the ondo rhythm, which is typically associated with summer festivals and community dance.

The segment features the character Jabu Jabu, an aquatic creature designed with the bright, simplistic aesthetic common to NHK's mid-period children's programming. The design prioritizes clear shapes and recognizable features to engage a preschool audience. As a segment within a cultural institution, the production was well-received for its ability to blend broadcast pedagogy with Japanese folk tradition, remaining a nostalgic touchstone for generations of Japanese viewers.
