Where it came from
JAPAN, Our Homeland, released in 2007 by WAO World, was conceived as an animated feature film intended to educate and inspire younger generations regarding the traditions and geography of Japan. Produced under the direction of Mitsuru Hongo, the project emerged during a period of Japanese cultural promotion, aiming to package historical and regional facts into an accessible, family-oriented narrative format.
The film's visual design leans into a clean, educational aesthetic characteristic of late 2000s Japanese studio animation. By combining episodic storytelling with travelogue-style sequences, the creators sought to emphasize national pride and heritage. Upon its release, the film was received primarily as a niche educational tool, recognized for its sincere tone and commitment to highlighting the diversity of Japan’s prefectures rather than for groundbreaking cinematic innovation.
