Where it came from
Japanese Chess, often categorized within the experimental short film output of Geidai Animation, emerged from the Tokyo University of the Arts graduate program. The project was created to showcase the technical proficiency and narrative vision of emerging animators within the school’s esteemed animation department, which emphasizes traditional hand-drawn techniques fused with contemporary digital storytelling.
The production sought to explore the strategic and psychological tension inherent in the game of shogi through a stylized, metaphorical lens. By utilizing stark visual contrasts and deliberate pacing, the creators aimed to elevate the board game into a cinematic study of human conflict. Upon its release, it was noted primarily within international animation festival circuits for its distinct aesthetic restraint and thematic maturity.
