Provenance

Where it came from

The Japan Animator Expo, or Nihon Animator Mihonichi, was launched in 2014 as a collaborative project between Studio Khara and Dwango. Initiated by Hideaki Anno, the project was designed to give animators and directors a creative sandbox to produce short-form ONA content without the constraints of traditional commercial television production. By bypassing standard production committees, the initiative allowed for significant artistic experimentation, ranging from experimental animation techniques to genre-bending storytelling that might not find a home in a mainstream series.

The series featured a diverse array of shorts from both established veterans and emerging talent, reflecting a desire to showcase the breadth of Japanese animation talent beyond the limitations of feature films. The shorts were released online, prioritizing accessibility and digital distribution, which helped foster a sense of community among international fans. Upon release, the project was well-received by critics and the animation industry for its emphasis on creative freedom and its willingness to platform unconventional visual styles.
