Synopsis

Rinko, a junior high school student, becomes a partner with Ruby, a rabbit Jewelpet, to find the Jewel Charms that were accidentally dropped from Jewel Land and got lost in the world of humans.

Since Jewel Charms appear around people in trouble, Rinko and Ruby always get involved in helping them solve their problems. With help from their friends and a good-looking high-level goverment official, they use the magic of Jewelpets to overcome obstacles, and in each episode they find another missing Jewelpet. Meanwhile, Black Cat Diana manipulates a group of petty criminals as she plans something evil to Jewel Land, the homeland of the Jewelpets.

Provenance

Where it came from

Jewelpet originated in 2009 as a collaborative multimedia project between Sanrio and Sega Toys. Developed to appeal primarily to young girls, the franchise centers on magical creatures known as Jewels, each corresponding to a specific birthstone and possessing unique powers. The series was designed to blend the traditional aesthetic sensibilities of Sanrio’s character-driven portfolio with a magical girl narrative structure, ultimately leading to the production of the inaugural television series by Studio Comet for TV Osaka.

The character designs were created to be highly collectible, emphasizing vibrant colors and distinct personalities to support a vast range of merchandise, including toys, stationery, and accessories. Upon its release, the anime served as the primary marketing vehicle for the toy line, helping to establish the series as a staple in the Japanese market for several years. While the narrative evolved through multiple iterations, the original 2009 series remains the cornerstone of the franchise's identity, reflecting a peak period for character-based anime marketing.
