Jingi

Jingi was produced by J.C.Staff in 1991 as a two-part original video animation series. Set in a gritty, underworld-focused version of Japan, the narrative centers on the titular protagonist, a man navigating the complex and violent hierarchies of the yakuza. The project emerged during the height of the OVA boom in the early nineties, a period characterized by experimental storytelling and higher production values that allowed studios to explore darker, more niche genres outside of traditional television constraints.

The character design and visual direction reflect the distinct aesthetic of the early nineties anime industry, emphasizing sharp, detailed line work and a moody, cinematic color palette intended to evoke hard-boiled crime cinema. The series was designed to appeal to mature audiences looking for narrative depth and character-driven drama. While it remains a relatively obscure title in the modern era, it is frequently cited by enthusiasts of the period for its grounded atmosphere and stylistic commitment to the yakuza subgenre.
