Jinghua Yuan

Jinghua Yuan, or 'Flowers in the Mirror,' was produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio during the early 1990s as a television adaptation of the classic Qing dynasty novel by Li Ruzhen. The series was designed to showcase traditional Chinese aesthetics through the medium of cel animation, drawing heavily on the fantastical travelogue structure of the original text, which follows the adventures of Tang Ao and his niece in the mythical land of overseas kingdoms.

The animation reflects the distinct artistic sensibilities of the Shanghai studio during its later period, prioritizing stylized character designs and imaginative world-building to capture the surreal nature of the novel's various cultural satires. Upon its release, it was recognized as a notable attempt to bring complex literary themes to a younger audience, serving as a landmark project for the studio as it navigated the transition toward more modern television formats while maintaining its commitment to folk-inspired storytelling.
