Where it came from
Joint is a short animated film produced at Tama Art University, a premier institution in Japan known for fostering experimental animation and fine arts. Created as a student project, the film reflects the university’s pedagogical emphasis on personal expression and technical experimentation within the traditional animation department, which has long served as an incubator for influential figures in the independent anime scene.
The film is characterized by a distinctive aesthetic that prioritizes fluid, surreal visual storytelling over conventional narrative structures. By leveraging the creative freedom afforded by the university’s studio environment, the production explores abstract movement and thematic ambiguity. Upon its release within the festival circuit and university showcases, it was noted for its artistic sensibilities and the high level of craftsmanship displayed by its student creators.
