Where it came from
Jormungand was produced by White Fox and released in 2012, adapted from the manga series by Keitaro Takahashi. The narrative follows Koko Hekmatyar, an international arms dealer, and her team of mercenaries as they navigate a morally complex world of geopolitical conflict. The series was designed to emphasize the gritty, high-stakes nature of the private security industry, focusing on the tactical realities of combat and the philosophical implications of global weapon distribution.
The adaptation was directed by Keitaro Motonaga, who aimed to balance the series' frantic action sequences with moments of character-driven reflection. Critics and audiences noted the series for its cynical yet detailed depiction of modern warfare and the unique dynamic between Koko and her child soldier bodyguard, Jonah. It is recognized as a staple of the seinen anime genre from the early 2010s, praised for its sharp dialogue and Taku Iwasaki's distinctive, eclectic musical score.
