The work centers on Ren Hao, a 23-year-old man who has no job or girlfriend. In order to make ends meet he rents out one of the rooms in his house. While he’s showing Lili, his first tenant, around the house, she’s suddenly attacked by a vampire named Vivian, and Ren Hao notices that Lili is actually a werewolf. As Ren Hao and Lili start living in the same house, Ren Hao is scouted for an organization that maintains order of the parallel universes, and strange creatures one after another become tenants in his house.

Where it came from
The Journal of the Mysterious Creatures emerged from the creative laboratories of Studio MMT as part of their venture into short-form original net animation (ONA). Designed to evoke the aesthetic of a naturalist’s field guide, the series was produced to explore the intersection of speculative biology and folkloric storytelling, appealing to audiences drawn to ambient, narrative-driven animation.
The visual direction, led by the studio's internal design team, prioritized a muted, tactile color palette and minimalist line work intended to emphasize the 'found footage' or 'archival' quality of the journal format. Upon its release, the project was noted by critics for its atmospheric restraint, serving as a distinct departure from the high-octane pacing common in contemporary web-based anime.
