Journey

Journey was developed by thatgamecompany and released in 2012 for the PlayStation 3, emerging as a landmark title in the indie game movement. Conceived as a response to the increasingly competitive and aggressive landscape of early 2010s gaming, the project aimed to evoke a sense of wonder and emotional resonance rather than providing a traditional win-state experience. It stripped away complex user interfaces and direct communication, forcing players to rely on simple musical signals and non-verbal cooperation as they navigated a vast, desolate desert landscape toward a distant mountain.

The game’s aesthetic, led by art director Matt Nava, was heavily influenced by the philosophy of simplification and the work of painters like Gerome and Hayao Miyazaki. The team focused on a visual language that emphasized scale and atmosphere, pairing these landscapes with a Grammy-nominated score by Austin Wintory that dynamically reacts to player interactions. Upon its release, Journey was met with universal critical acclaim, cited for its ability to foster genuine human connection between anonymous strangers and solidifying its reputation as a seminal piece of interactive art.
