Three hundred years ago, in the frigid land of Siberia, Jubei Yagyu engaged in a fierce battle with Kitaretsusai of the Northern Yagyu clan. The duel was costly, as his daughter Freesia was frozen in suspended animation. As a result of global warming in the present day, Freesia breaks free from her icy grave and moves to Japan as a middle school transfer student, where she befriends Jiyuu Nanohana. Little does Jiyuu know that Freesia is targeting her to acquire the coveted Lovely Eye Patch, which Freesia believes is rightfully hers.

Where it came from
Jubei Chan 2: The Counterattack of Siberia Yagyu was produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse and released in 2004 as a direct sequel to the 1999 original series. It continues the adventures of Jiyu Nanohana, a schoolgirl who unexpectedly inherits the legendary eyepatch of Yagyu Jubei, granting her the skills of a master swordsman. The series maintains the unique blend of historical folklore and lighthearted school-life comedy that defined the franchise, expanding on the conflict between rival ninja clans.
The series was directed by Akitaro Daichi, who also helmed the original project and was instrumental in shaping its quirky, whimsical tone. Daichi sought to balance intense action sequences with character-driven humor, utilizing a distinct visual style that often emphasizes expressive animation over hyper-realism. Upon its release, the show was well-regarded by fans of the magical girl and samurai genres for its consistent artistic direction and the deepening of Jiyu’s personal growth as she struggles to balance her mundane life with her martial destiny.
