Where it came from
Jubei-chan the Ninja Girl: Secret of the Lovely Eyepatch was produced by the acclaimed animation studio Madhouse and premiered in 1999. Created by Akitaro Daichi, the series emerged during a period of experimentation within the magical girl and samurai genres, blending traditional chanbara period drama tropes with contemporary high school comedy. The narrative follows Jiyu Nanohana, a girl who becomes the reincarnation of the legendary swordsman Yagyu Jubei, distinguished by a magical eyepatch that grants her exceptional martial prowess.
The character designs were handled by Hajime Watanabe, who opted for a clean, expressive aesthetic that balanced the show's slapstick humor with its moments of intense action. Daichi aimed to subvert expectations of stoic samurai narratives by grounding the legendary fighter in the life of a modern, slightly clumsy teenager. Upon its release, the series was received as a charmingly unconventional entry in the studio’s catalog, praised for its tight comedic timing and the distinctive, lighthearted approach to its historical premise.
