JUNK HEAD

Junk Head was crafted by the Japanese animator Takahide Hori as an ambitious, labor-intensive stop-motion project. Originally conceived as a short film in 2013, the project expanded significantly over several years as Hori took on the roles of director, animator, character designer, and set builder. He drew inspiration from the aesthetics of dark science fiction and post-apocalyptic world-building, focusing on the gritty, tactile nature of handmade puppets to convey a unique subterranean vision.

The production process spanned roughly seven years, characterized by Hori’s solitary focus and meticulous attention to detail within his studio, Yamiken. Upon its wider release, the film garnered critical appreciation for its technical ingenuity and the sheer scale of effort required to sustain its distinct atmosphere without the support of a major production house. It is widely viewed by critics and audiences as a testament to the capabilities of independent, auteur-driven stop-motion animation.
