JUNK HEAD 1

Junk Head 1 originated as a 2013 short film directed by Takahide Hori, who undertook the project as a solo labor of love. Produced by his studio, Yamiken, the film was crafted through an exhaustive stop-motion animation process, with Hori designing, building, and animating the intricate puppet characters entirely by himself. The narrative, set in a dystopian future where humanity has retreated underground to survive, showcases a uniquely gritty, industrial aesthetic that emphasizes tactile textures and mechanical complexity.

Upon its release, the project garnered significant acclaim for its technical ambition and singular vision, eventually serving as the foundational proof-of-concept for the feature-length film Junk Head. Critics and animation enthusiasts often highlight the work for its dedication to traditional, physical craftsmanship in an era dominated by digital production. The film’s success allowed Hori to expand the scope of his world-building, cementing its status as a cult classic within the independent stop-motion community.
