Juudou-bu Monogatari

Juudou-bu Monogatari, or Judo Club Story, was produced as a two-part original video animation by Studio DEEN, released in 1991. The project was based on the long-running manga series by Makoto Kobayashi, which had already gained significant popularity for its unique blend of slapstick comedy, character-driven humor, and authentic depictions of high school judo. The adaptation sought to capture the kinetic, exaggerated art style of Kobayashi's work while translating the narrative pacing into the episodic OVA format favored by Japanese animation studios during the late eighties and early nineties.

The production design was overseen by animators familiar with the distinctive, rounded character silhouettes that define Kobayashi's aesthetic. By leaning into the comedic potential of the sport, the studio aimed to differentiate the series from more serious martial arts dramas of the era. Upon its release, the OVA was well-received by fans of the source material who appreciated the effort to maintain the original manga's irreverent tone and expressive animation style, solidifying its place as a representative piece of early 1990s comedic anime.
