Juusenki L-Gaim II: Farewell My Lovely + Pentagona Doors

Juusenki L-Gaim II: Farewell My Lovely and its companion feature Pentagona Doors were released in 1987 as a conclusion to the original Heavy Metal L-Gaim television series. Produced by Starchild Records, these OVAs served to tie up loose narrative threads and offer fans a visual refinement of the original story. The project emerged during a transitional period for mecha anime in the mid-1980s, where studios began shifting toward home video formats to allow for higher production values and more experimental storytelling that did not strictly adhere to television broadcast constraints.

The visual aesthetic was heavily influenced by the distinct design language of Mamoru Nagano, who served as the primary mecha designer for the L-Gaim franchise. Nagano’s work on the series is noted for introducing a more organic, elegant look to mechanical robots compared to the bulky, militaristic designs common at the time. The transition to the OVA format allowed the animation team to lean further into these stylized, elongated silhouettes, which were generally well-received by the dedicated audience who appreciated the series' pivot away from conventional super robot tropes toward a more refined, space-opera narrative.
