Juusenki L-Gaim III: Full Metal Soldier

Juusenki L-Gaim III: Full Metal Soldier was released in 1987 as the third installment in a series of compilation OVAs that summarized and recontextualized the 1984 Sunrise mecha anime Heavy Metal L-Gaim. Produced by Starchild Records, this specific entry was designed to conclude the narrative arc of the original television series, catering to a dedicated fanbase that had emerged from director Yoshiyuki Tomino’s complex world-building and the distinct mechanical aesthetic of the series.

The visual identity of L-Gaim is heavily defined by Mamoru Nagano’s influential character and mecha designs, which favored sleek, organic, and elegant silhouettes that stood in stark contrast to the blockier aesthetics common in mecha anime of that era. Full Metal Soldier served as a final revisit to these designs, and while the compilation format was primarily intended to provide closure for loyal viewers, the series remains noted among enthusiasts for bridging the gap between the traditional super robot genre and the more sophisticated 'real robot' movement of the 1980s.
