Kabocha no Oji-san

Kabocha no Oji-san, or The Pumpkin Prince, emerged from the imaginative programming landscape of NHK in Japan. This character was designed as part of a classic educational and entertainment block, reflecting the studio's long-standing tradition of blending whimsical character design with themes tailored for a younger audience. The aesthetic follows the clean, expressive lines characteristic of Japanese children’s television from that era, prioritizing warmth and accessibility to help engage viewers in the gentle, episodic storytelling format typical of the network.

The design process focused on anthropomorphizing the humble kabocha squash, transforming a seasonal vegetable into a relatable protagonist. By imbuing the pumpkin with distinct human-like features and a bright, approachable palette, the illustrators aimed to create a character that felt both grounded in domestic Japanese culture and fantastical enough to capture a child's imagination. Upon its broadcast debut, the character was received as a charming addition to NHK's roster, remembered fondly by audiences for its distinct visual identity and the wholesome nature of its televised segments.
