Kachi Kachi Yama Meoto no Sujimichi

Kachi Kachi Yama Meoto no Sujimichi, also known as The Rabbit and the Badger, is a 1939 Japanese short film produced by the Yokohama Cinema Shokai. As part of a wave of early Japanese animation efforts, the film adapts a traditional Japanese folktale featuring a vengeful rabbit and a mischievous tanuki. The production reflects the technological and stylistic constraints of the era, utilizing stop-motion puppetry techniques that were becoming a hallmark of the studio's output during the late 1930s.

The film was directed by Mitsuyo Seo, a pioneering figure in the development of Japanese animation who sought to translate folklore into accessible, moving visual narratives. While the film is primarily recognized today as a relic of pre-war Japanese cinema, its design reflects an intentional effort to synthesize traditional Japanese aesthetic motifs with the growing global influence of puppet animation. The work was received as an experimental educational and entertainment piece, contributing to the foundational lore of the rabbit-and-tanuki cycle in national media.
