Kaede New Town

Kaede New Town is a segment included in the 2007 anthology film Afro Samurai: Resurrection, which was produced by the acclaimed studio CoMix Wave. The project emerged from a unique collaborative environment, blending the distinct visual sensibilities of the studio known for its lush, atmospheric backgrounds with the gritty, stylized aesthetic of the Afro Samurai franchise. It reflects a period when Japanese animation houses were increasingly exploring digital compositing techniques to elevate short-form storytelling within larger feature-length productions.

The aesthetic direction for the project aimed to marry traditional animation techniques with the high-contrast, bold design choices characteristic of Takashi Okazaki’s original manga series. By leveraging CoMix Wave's expertise in detailed environmental art, the creators sought to ground the surreal, action-heavy narrative in a setting that felt both grounded and visually evocative. The work was received as a technically sophisticated entry within the franchise, praised by critics for its refined lighting and the fluid integration of its distinct stylistic elements.
