Where it came from
Kaeru no Pickles: Kimochi no Iro was produced in 2020 as a celebratory television series marking the 25th anniversary of the popular Pickles the Frog character. Created by the toy company Nakajima Corporation in 1994, the character began as a simple, soft plush frog designed to offer comfort and warmth. The anime series was developed to expand the character's narrative reach, focusing on gentle, short-form storytelling that emphasizes emotional expression and daily life.
The series was directed by Asai Koji and utilized a distinct visual style intended to mimic the tactile quality of the original plush toys. By employing stop-motion aesthetic techniques within the animation, the production team aimed to retain the nostalgic and soothing atmosphere that fans of the merchandise have associated with the brand for decades. The show was received as a lighthearted, therapeutic watch, successfully bridging the gap between the character's origins in the gift market and the world of broadcast media.
