Where it came from
Kagami no Kojou no Mae to Ato, or The Before and After of Lonely Castle in the Mirror, was released in 2023 by Shochiku to accompany the cinematic adaptation of Mizuki Tsujimura’s award-winning novel. The special content serves as an expansion of the film’s narrative world, providing context for the mysterious castle and the individual struggles of the protagonists. It reflects the studio's commitment to deepening the emotional resonance of the main feature by exploring the backstory of the characters who were whisked away from their daily lives.
The production maintains the aesthetic identity established by A-1 Pictures under director Keiichi Hara. The visual design focuses on the contrast between the bleak reality of the characters' school lives and the ethereal, dreamlike architecture of the titular castle. Upon its release, the material was received by fans of the original literature as a thoughtful companion piece that bridges the gaps between the book’s internal monologues and the film’s visual storytelling.
