Kagayaite Ite 10 years after

Kagayaite Ite 10 years after is a documentary production by NHK, released to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. The program serves as a follow-up to previous coverage, focusing on the long-term recovery efforts and the personal narratives of individuals living in the affected coastal regions of the Tohoku area. It was created to provide a reflective look at the progress made in infrastructure and community rebuilding over the decade, while acknowledging the ongoing emotional challenges faced by survivors.

The documentary reflects NHK’s journalistic commitment to disaster archival and long-form human interest storytelling. It utilizes a restrained, observational visual style characteristic of the broadcaster’s documentary standards, prioritizing intimate interviews and archival footage over dramatic reenactment. Upon its broadcast, it was received as a solemn and necessary contribution to the national conversation regarding disaster resilience and the slow, often difficult process of regional revitalization.
