Where it came from
Kai Feng Qitan: Zhege Baogong Bu Taixing, or 'Strange Tales of Kaifeng: This Judge is Not Very Reliable,' was produced by Studio LAN and released as a web-based original net animation (ONA). The series serves as a comedic, reimagined take on the legendary Judge Bao, a historical figure celebrated in Chinese folklore for his integrity and pursuit of justice. By shifting the tone from traditional legal drama to lighthearted situational comedy, the studio sought to appeal to a younger, digital-native audience through irreverent character design and rapid-fire gags.
The animation style and narrative structure reflect the broader trend of 'guochuang'—indigenous Chinese animation—gaining traction in the late 2010s. Studio LAN aimed to subvert the rigid archetypes of classical literature by portraying the iconic Judge Bao as a flawed and relatable protagonist. While the show occasionally faced scrutiny from traditionalists regarding its historical liberties, it was generally well-received by fans of the genre for its creative energy and refreshing departure from the solemn, morality-heavy adaptations of the past.
