A world blanketed in an endless and ever-growing ocean of snow. The people eke out a living, either huddled around the roots of enormous trees dotting the surface, or high in the canopy, which spreads over the planet's atmosphere.
A chance meeting between Kaina, a youth from the canopy, and Liliha, a young woman from the surface, sets off a chain of events that will change the fate of the world.

Where it came from
Kaina of the Great Snow Sea was produced by Polygon Pictures to commemorate the studio’s 40th anniversary and reflects their continued evolution in cel-shaded 3D animation. The series was created through a collaboration between acclaimed manga artist Tsutomu Nihei and director Hiroaki Ando, who sought to blend traditional post-apocalyptic narrative tropes with a distinct, expansive world-building aesthetic defined by massive organic structures and treacherous frozen landscapes.
The visual direction focuses on a stark contrast between the high-altitude 'Canopy' and the dangerous, snow-covered 'Great Snow Sea' below, emphasizing a sense of vertical scale rarely seen in television anime. Upon its release in 2023, the series was noted by critics for its unique environmental storytelling and its commitment to the intricate, industrial-fantasy design language that has become a hallmark of Nihei’s collaborative projects.
