Where it came from
Kaitai Shita Inu no Blues, or The Blues of the Dissected Dog, is a surreal and deeply melancholic manga work by the influential underground artist Susumu Higa. Released in the late 1990s, the collection serves as a stark reflection on the isolation and societal malaise prevalent in Japan during the post-bubble economic stagnation, utilizing anthropomorphic and dark imagery to mirror the anxieties of the era.
Higa’s artistic style in this collection is characterized by a haunting, minimalist aesthetic that prioritizes emotional resonance over conventional narrative structure. By employing a gritty, experimental approach to character design and panel layout, he sought to challenge traditional manga tropes, ultimately earning critical acclaim within the gekiga movement for his uncompromising and evocative commentary on the human condition.
