Where it came from
The Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel OVA was produced in 2008 by Studio Nomad as a direct-to-video adaptation of a popular pachislot machine released by Sammy Corporation. This project emerged during a period when Japanese animation studios frequently collaborated with gaming manufacturers to expand the intellectual property of successful arcade games into multimedia franchises, utilizing the aesthetic tropes of magical girl anime to engage players of the original machine.
The character designs were handled by Fumiya Kondo, who aimed to capture the energetic and lighthearted tone characteristic of the mid-2000s mahou shoujo genre. The animation sought to translate the high-impact visual feedback of the pachislot game into a narrative format, focusing on the comedic exploits of two teenage girls leading double lives as phantom thieves. Upon its release, it was received primarily as a promotional companion piece for the gaming machine, successfully fostering a niche but dedicated following that eventually led to a full television series adaptation in 2011.
