Where it came from
Kaitou Jigoma Ongaku-hen was released in 1988 by Victor Entertainment as a soundtrack and companion piece for the animated adaptation of the classic French serial character Fantômas, known in Japan as Jigoma. The project emerged during a period of creative experimentation in the Japanese home video market, where studios often produced standalone musical suites or conceptual soundtracks to accompany niche or experimental animation styles.
The design and composition of the album aimed to evoke the dark, atmospheric pulp aesthetic of early 20th-century mystery literature. By blending orchestral tension with the synth-driven sounds typical of late 80s Japanese production, the music sought to pay homage to the suspenseful tone of the original Jigoma stories while appealing to an audience interested in avant-garde animation and atmospheric soundscapes.
