Kamichu! OVA

Kamichu! was originally conceived as a 16-episode anime series produced by Brain's Base and Aniplex, broadcast in 2005. The OVA episodes were released later to conclude the narrative arc, extending the charming story of Yurie Hitotsubashi, a shy middle-school girl in 1980s Onomichi who unexpectedly transforms into a Shinto deity. The project was the brainchild of Besame Mucho, a creative collective that sought to blend the magical realism of Studio Ghibli-esque settings with the grounded, nostalgic atmosphere of small-town Japan.

The series and its subsequent OVAs were noted for their distinct visual direction, which utilized real-world architectural references from the city of Onomichi to anchor the fantasy elements in a tangible environment. The character designs by Hideyuki Mori emphasized simplicity and expressiveness, contributing to the show's warm, meditative reception. While not a massive commercial blockbuster, it earned a dedicated cult following for its gentle pacing and its sensitive, whimsical exploration of adolescence and local folklore.
