Kamigami no Asobi

Kamigami no Asobi was produced by studio Brain's Base and released in 2014, based on a visual novel franchise developed by Broccoli. The project originated as part of Broccoli's strategic expansion into multimedia properties aimed at a female demographic, following the successful formula of franchises like Uta no Prince-sama. The narrative centers on Yui Kusanagi, a high school student summoned by Zeus to an academy designed to teach young deities the complexities of human emotion and love.

The character designs were handled by Kazuki Yone, an illustrator renowned for her work on the Hakuoki series. Yone’s aesthetic, characterized by soft lines and elegant, period-influenced fantasy costumes, was instrumental in establishing the show's romantic atmosphere. Upon release, the series was received primarily by fans of the otome genre, who appreciated the high production values and the interplay between the diverse mythological figures, even as critics noted the inherent narrative limitations of adapting a branching visual novel into a linear television format.
