Where it came from
KAMITSUBAKI CITY UNDER CONSTRUCTION emerged as a 2025 television series born from the creative ecosystem of the virtual artist collective Kamitsubaki Studio. Developed in collaboration with Kadokawa, the project serves as a narrative expansion of the studio's established metaverse, which has long blended music, illustration, and digital character performance. The series functions as both a celebration of the collective's aesthetic identity and a formal entry into long-form linear storytelling.
The production design reflects the distinct visual language curated by the studio's core illustrators and designers, who prioritize a cyberpunk-infused, melancholic atmosphere synonymous with the label's branding. By bridging the gap between independent virtual artist subculture and traditional anime production standards, the series was conceived to invite a broader audience into the studio's lore-heavy world. It has been received as a landmark move in the studio's transition from musical projects to comprehensive media franchise management.
