Loved and well fed by the family, Maru gets rounder and fatter every day, spending most of his day sitting by the window and looking at the garden outside. Where it came from
Kanashiki Debu Neko-chan, or The Sad Chubby Cat, originated as a serialized newspaper story in the Ehime Shimbun beginning in 2018, written by Ichiro Kano and illustrated by Shinji Kano. The narrative follows the journey of a house cat named Maru who, after being abandoned, wanders through Ehime Prefecture on a quest to find his true purpose. The story was created to promote regional pride and tourism, blending local folklore and geography with a heartwarming, character-driven narrative that emphasizes empathy and connection.
The television adaptation, produced by Cyclone Graphics, was designed to translate the unique watercolor aesthetic of the original illustrations into a moving medium. By utilizing a distinct visual style that honors the source material's gentle, melancholic charm, the studio aimed to capture the quiet introspective nature of Maru's travels. Upon its release, the series was well-received for its pastoral atmosphere and its ability to act as a meditative reflection on the landscape and culture of its setting.
