KanColle

The KanColle television series, produced by studio Diomedéa and released in 2015, emerged from the immense popularity of the original 2013 web-browser game developed by Kadokawa Games. The franchise centers on anthropomorphized naval warships known as 'fleet girls,' a concept that draws heavily on historical Japanese naval vessels from World War II. By transforming these metal leviathans into characters, the project tapped into a burgeoning cultural fascination with personification, aiming to offer a narrative-driven expansion to the game's strategic gameplay.

Directed by Keizou Kusakawa, the adaptation sought to translate the game's collection-based mechanics into a cohesive military drama focused on the character Fubuki. The animation design leaned into the distinct aesthetic of the game's various illustrators, striving to capture the balance between tactical naval combat and the interpersonal lives of the characters at the base. While the series achieved significant commercial success and helped solidify the franchise as a multimedia powerhouse in Japan, it faced varied reception from critics and fans regarding its departure from the game's original tone and the pacing of its combat sequences.
